From the packaging (a plain brown cover and a plain CD) to the opening ultra-clean guitar notes it is obvious that Son of the Castellan wants their debut record to be the next Spiderland, and who can blame them. Problem is, the band has listened to too much Boy''s Life in the meantime. Instead of the slow-paced record they envision, it takes off with an energy that is contagious. The half-spoken verses and all scream choruses come courtesy of Greg Neate and Jim Bob Aiken, and they do a fine job. At times the band is not as tight as it needs to be -- high hats a bit off tempo and a few accidental notes here and there -- yet it makes the record more endearing. They are really pushing their ability to the limit, and making a very strong album to boot. A few times Son of the Castellan manages to achieve a level of tension and beauty that is approximate to Slint''s masterpiece, but then hits the distortion pedal and leaves that legacy far behind. - Yancey Strickler, All Music Guide
