Details:
Vaughn & Company is an area favorite in the pub/club circuit. Their modern blues style has it’s roots in classic rhythm and blues but infuses a modern sound at the same time. The band’s latest 15 track CD release “Coming Home” does an excellent job of showcasing the bands well rounded talents.
Vaughn & Company’s “Coming Home” is excellently mixed and recorded and spans a variety of styles & genres. Tracks like the dreamy “Feel The Love”, “Aqua” and “You and Me” smooth through cool bass lines with Lenny Kravitz like soulful vocals.
The band shows off their radio readiness with tracks like “Aqua”. The tune has blues roots but packs a bass punch with a Red Hot Chili Pepper vibe. Just when you thought you have the bands main vein pegged they go into the track “Blew See B”, a cool jazz blues tune that would sound right at home on a Brian Setzer stage.
Vaughn & Co. stick to the true blues roots with the old school 70’s sounding “Papa”. It’s almost Motown but with melodic funk. The title track really shines, it’s vibrant, flowing and almost bounces. You might say this one song incorporates all the variety of the funky, the fun, the range, the instrumental talent and the writing ability Vaughn & Co. expresses on the other tunes in one song. I see why it’s the title track. While 14 out of 15 songs are originals they do throw in a cover of Don Williams’s “I Believe In Love”. They kept the same lyrics and basic melody but that’s where the similarities stop. It’s funkier, faster and shows much more soul. The quick vocal timing and fast beat turned out a really fresh sound on this old classic.
Overall this is a very well produced compilation of great original work. With 15 tracks it’s great to just slide it in and let it go. There are several stand out tunes but just letting it play through is a perfect way to spend an hour.
The entire compilation is laced with the essence of 60’s guitar greats, smooth jazz bass, complimentary percussion and interesting arrangements. Not to mention the soaring vocals that at times seem very Aerosmith-esque, a rare but good thing (especially on “You and Me”).
You can hear it all live at Vaughn & Co’s CD release party Saturday Oct. 24th at Play By Play Sports Cafe in Silverton. You can get your own copy there and after the show your going to want one. We love, absolutely love, to hear this kind of quality original music from our local musicians. Get out to the party and support the band’s efforts! If you can’t make the CD release party you can catch them live at Milford Latitudes Oct. 16th, Mama Vita’s Oct. 17th and Latitudes Anderson Nov. 7th and Milford Latitudes Nov. 27.
