"January 1960... it was a hell of a winter. We piled into a drafty, black 1954 Cadillac Eldorado convertible...picked up Route 66 and pointed the Caddy west, the only way that road lead from the Windy City, in search of a new life in
Phoenix, Arizona...the Valley of the Sun. I imagined cowboys shooting it out in the streets, unhitching their horses and riding off into the sunset or maybe the nearest saloon. After several days driving, stopping only to fill ''er up and sleep in the neon bungalow motor courts along the mother road, we arrived. .....These eleven postcards are love letters, distant watery images...mirages of the Valley of the Sun. It was a hell of a Vienna."
