Reuben James was born in America. When he was 7 years old, he moved to the Caribbean. The beautiful island of St. Vincent is where he lived. Being introduced to DJ equipment from a friend and doing mic nights ignited that desire to perform. Through the encouragement from his sister, Reuben decided to give it a try on his own. He went to the underground and did some freestyling. People began surrounding him, circling him as he played. This was the green light he needed to officially begin writing, recording and playing music.
Reuben moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 2008, bit his soul and his music remained on St. Vincent Island. You can taste his heritage when you listen to his music. You can hear his music being played everywhere on the island and they all seem to know him, welcome him and listen to his music. They are proud to have Reuben in their grasp.
Reuben has performed at open mic nights around Atlanta, Ga. He has also been on promo tours in the Caribbean. He was in Negril, Jamaica, arriving to hear his music being played in the streets. On May 6, he had the privilege of being among the opening acts for a reggae legend, Elephant Man. He has also been compared to a young Bob Marley.
His style is Reggae unlike no other. It is a new way of life for him – without boundaries or race. He praises what life has given him and hates what was taken away. These are life’s lessons of which he has learned quickly. These lessons are told to you in Reuben’s way, through his music. He expresses it for the masses through his gift. In this way he serves his purpose. He can sometimes appear as a bit of a paradox because of his diversity, but anyone who knows him knows that it is just one of the games that life plays on anyone who has had the wonderful misfortune of having been raised in two countries. He is sensible and senseless. He speaks English to Americans but when he sings you feel the Island in his heart. This can not be faked.
Reuben is also a very focused individual. He’s had conversations with heavy hitting promoters who know who he is and states that he has huge potential in this business. They are watching every move he makes, waiting for the right moment to approach. He also approached Barnes & Nobles, gave the CD to the manager – liked it so much that they sold them in their Camp Creek Parkway location. Reuben James’ album became a top 3 seller!
Reuben James has two new singles, “Puppet” and “Carnival”. These two songs are off his new CD, “G.U.P.I.” (Guilty Until Proven Innocent). These two songs will show the audience the versatility of this amazing artist. “Puppet”, has a slow rhythm with deep raw vocals and tells a story of people treating him like a puppet, through the years in the military through every day trials and tribulations of today. “Carnival” is just a fun Caribbean party song with no rules, no control, swap dancing partners – just fun. This song has an up beat tempo, light hearted and that signature Caribbean rhythm is forever present and glorious to listen to. Versatile? Absolutely…..That’s a true musician.
G.U.P.I. is scheduled for physical release in February, 2010. The songs on this CD are packed with life experiences, lessons, if you will, on how to survive the fire balls that hare hurled at you when you go through life. Whether the songs are of serious nature or a more fun, happy style, Reuben James has that innate ability to speak through his music – eloquently and clearly.
