Details:
1. Cold Water
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Luke: mandolin; Sean: vocals; Roch: vocals
An anti-alcohol song from the 19th century, aka “Away, away the bowl”. Found as a field recording in the Max Hunter Folk Song Collection. More or less original lyrics but musically transformed from a spiritual hymn to a more sober song.

2. Can The Circle Be Unbroken
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: mandolin; Luke: violin
A classic by the Carter Family – founding fathers and mothers of country music. Ours is quite close to their version, including some metric peculiarities (but has changed in key to Bb which once made one die-hard folkie mumble: “Must be jazz …”)

3. All I Got’s Gone
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Luke: mandolin
Originally a song by Ernest Stoneman from 1928. Found on the “Songs from the Depression” album by The New Lost City Ramblers. Seems as if it was written only days ago. We’ve just given it a more pop-song like appearance (and have dropped some less timeless verses).

4. Dying Girl`s Message
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Sean: banjo
Loose reconstruction of a song we came to know as an a-capella version by wonderful Almeda Riddle - found as a field recording in the Wolf Folklore Collection. Exhibits a fatal combination of two typical topics in old-time songs: abandonment and death.

5. Dark And Stormy Weather
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Luke: mandolin
A song we know from a Carter Family record. Paradoxically enough theirs is a bright and clear version of almost joyous character. (Which might be due to a fundamental religious confidence.) Our version is somewhat darker. Not really stormier though.

6. No Hiding Place
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Luke: mandolin
Also rests on a Carter Family song. Basically. In fact it’s completely new music around the old lyrics that refers to a passage in the bible (Revelations 6:15-17) dealing with the attempt to escape responsibilty. Not exactly an outdated topic.

7. No Depression
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Sean: banjo
A Carter Family classic, originally recorded in 1936. Famously covered by Uncle Tupelo in 1990 when it became the eponymous song of the first Alternative Country record. With an apocalyptic undertone the lyrics ingeniously blend the economic and the mental phenomenon.

8. Keep On The Firing Line
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: violin; Luke: mandolin
Originally a gospel song. We’ve added two chords and changed the lyrics slightly (leaving out esoteric lines like “God will only use the soldier He can trust”, “Life is but to labor for the Master dear”) to make it a profane and multifunctional encouragement song.

9. Adieu False Heart
Karin: vocals; Dominik: wurlitzer; Gidi: bass; Luke: mandolin
A song by Fiddlin'' Arthur Smith from 1938. We’ve altered melody and harmonies but haven’t touched the lyrics including the awesome cosmology of “My mind is like the constant sun / From the east to the west it ranges / Yours is like unto the moon / It''s every month it changes”.

10. All Good Times
Karin: vocals; Dominik: guitar/vocals; Gidi: bass; Ruth: mandolin; Luke: violin
A song we know from a 1937-version by Bill Monroe, “Father of Bluegrass”. We’ve stuck quite close to the original, but have unintentionally enhaced its swaying rhythm. Which could be said to reflect the lyrics’ unsteady position between defeatism (“all good times are past and gone”) and consolation (“don’t you weep no more”).
