Many times, especially for singers, musicians tend to become their family''s wedding singers. Something different has happened to me: I have become my family''s funeral singer. This is actually something I''m very proud of; it''s a great feeling to be able to lend some amount of comfort in difficult moments. Music can be very therapeutic no matter your belief system!
After each funeral, family members and friends said, "you should record this music." For many years I didn''t give the suggestion a thought; however, after my stepfather''s death and subsequent funeral in 2003, I took stock of the music and what it really meant to me. In essence, it''s my roots music. I sang these songs week after week at church, and they are responsible for influencing the way that I write and sing. While I may no longer consider myself Catholic or even Christian, the music is still mine and I have as much a claim on it as it has on me. I still feel calmed by the songs; they help me get through tough moments. They are as worthy a Muse as any other song or genre from my past.
So, I decided to take a new look at these songs (some of them written hundreds of years ago, and in Latin no less!), and add my voice, literally and figuratively, as a way to include my own perspective to the stories they have been telling all along.
It’s my sincerest hope that the emotion and respect I feel for this music comes through, and that you are able to connect to the spirit of the songs.
