Hearts & Mines, based out of the nation''s capital, was formed mid 2009 with a focus spanning from socio-political activism to aspects of personal struggles through adversity. After returning from a combat tour to Afghanistan in 2008, Matthew Luloff (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) felt compelled to give a voice to those he felt have been silenced. In an industry saturated with third party perspectives, the mission of the band is to bring sincerity and authenticity to national and global political discourse. The other founding members; Grant MacIntyre (bass guitar, back up vox), Jason Watts (Percussion, back up vox) and Josh Drazilov (guitar) are all dedicated to helping propel the music and message forward to as many willing ears as possible. “A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.” (Leopold Stokowski) These famous words encapsulate everything the band stands for. Wherever silence prevails, be it a silenced populace, demographic or individual the band will be there to paint the silence with their music and give a voice to those who can’t be heard. With four shows in two weeks in December 2009, Television appearances on A Channel Ottawa and Rogers Television Daytime, a feature on the Indie Spotlight on Ottawa''s New Rock Alternative Live 88.5, H&M is becoming a staple in Ottawa music.
