According to those taste-bud scientist types, it takes seven exposures to a new food before a child craves the new flavors. Hookspin feels music is sort of the same. Did you really love ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ the first time you heard it? Did you want more Jane’s Addiction, Willie Nelson or Wilco after just one listen? After hearing Robert Plant sing ‘baby, baby, baby’10,000 times on that song who didn’t want to punch him right in the nose? But Jimmy Page’s incredible riffs eventually won your heart and now you can’t live without Led Zeppelin. Didn’t you want to plunge pencils into your ears after first hearing Mariah Carey? But, after listening a few times, weren’t you won over by her grace and the important social message of her songs. You’ve even come to respect Mariah. Right?

Hookspin hopes you like the new songs on our new CD: Hookspin: Why and What, as much as we do. Put on your headphones and listen to each one at least seven times. Let them into your head. Decide which songs are your favorites. Introduce Hookspin’s songs to the other music on your iPod. We’ll get along with the big bands that you already enjoy. We’ll play nice, we promise.

About the Band

Hookspin’s natural habitat is a small yellow cape located in Mansfield Center Connecticut. To be more precise, the band lives in the basement. It’s really not so bad.

The members of Hookspin gather on Friday (or Saturday) evenings every few weeks (or every few months). When the stars have properly aligned (and various spouses have granted permission) Rich, Juan, Pete, and Bob lug their gear down into the basement. Then we tune up, plug-in, and play loud rock ‘n roll music.

Not many outsiders have heard Hookspin’s music, but those who have claimed to like it.

“You sound a little like Gunpowder Barbie or the Kinks, with a bit of early REM thrown in,” said Brenda B.

“You guys play many different styles of music and you play them well. You’re no one-trick pony,” said Pete S.

“I like ‘Bridge Song.’ That carnival organ riff was stuck in my head for three days,” said Kyle G.

“I love the song ‘Onion.’ It sounds trippy,” said Jason D.

“My favorite song is ‘Sweet Marie’. Lot’s of the songs are weird, really good, but weird” , said Martha R. “do you really play guitar with a magnet?”

“I dig the driving beat of ‘Justify.’ I would actually buy and listen to that song,’ said Jakob L.

“Didn’t you know the title ‘Sweet Marie’ has been used by like five other bands?” said Norman A.

Laura B: “Why would you write a funny song about global warming (‘Insanely Tan’)? What’s wrong with you?”

Even the neighbors on our quiet street seem to like what they’ve been hearing lately. “I thought it was someone’s radio playing loud- way, way too loud- but you guys sound great,” Linda D. told us. “By the way, are you ever going to finish painting the fence?” Although we can’t exactly tell how much these folks know about good music, they sure know how to call the cops when the jamming goes on past midnight.

After playing a few, well-received gigs outside the basement — and wanting to get better gigs — Hookspin decided to make a recording. We bought expensive software and pre amps, microphones, headphones, and mixers. Over time, we came to own miles of overpriced cables (that somehow tie themselves into knots when no one is looking). We recorded, re-arranged, and overdubbed. We mixed, discussed, listened to, tossed out, and rewrote the songs. We drank beer and tequila. We made funny faces at each other.

Finally, after approximately 157 Friday (or Saturday) get-togethers, Hookspin’s recording was done. We were ready to present to the world our debut CD:Hookspin: Why or What. We’re proud of our new baby.

Thank you,
Hookspin

Why and What is Hookspin''s first full length CD. Several of the songs including Bridge, Justify, Onion, and What''s It Gonna Be, received very positive ratings when recently tested by a worldwide music testing service. Listeners all over the world liked the song but, oddly, these four songs were rated highest by the good people of Australia and Canada (they must have great taste in music!). Here are some of the comments people made:

"Would buy full song and album"

"Excellent, i look forward to hearing more from you in the future"

"Not bad at all. A little like Bob Dylan."

"Oh my good. I really like this song. the lyric is nice, the melody is niice, and the girl and the boys voice together sounds oh so perfect. Keep doing that, it sounds nice :D"

"Love it, and amazing picture. If you want i can publicly rate your music? kai_and_kay@https://www.tradebit.com"

"very awesome. i like the vibe, it''s kicky."

"this is something I would actually listen to"

"Fan-fucking-tastic! I love the song"

"Driving the highway in the desert, this song on, and a big old fatty blazing! YEAH!"

"i lover this track so much i want to meet u"

"nice feel very original and at the same time classic rock. LOVE THE ORGAN INTRO. Amazing song. even the lyrics are good!"

"Whoa, a very fun song! Great vibe!"

"Original song, like the uptempo sound, and you can hear the vocal, good song."

I did not include any of the negative comments.... what do they know? Nothing!

We tried to record in a very organic manner. The instruments, amps, drums, and vocals are real. There aren''t any midi tracks or canned drum loops. It''s real music played by real people. So, if you choose to, give us a listen and perhaps you will find a new band and some new music that you dig!
Thanks- Rich

Justify is a song about a personal quest for freedom. It sounds like it was written while driving though a blistering hot desert - and it was; during an across country road trip. I love Pete''s solo on this one. Fun times.

Onion is a unique and trippy sounding tune featuring e-bow guitar, a meandering baseline and (no offense to anyone) Ringo inspired drum fills.

Insanely Tan (cocoa butter) is a fun garage rock song about the demise of most of mankind because of the whole global warming thing you may have heard about. As the world burns to a crisp the only survivors are an overly tan tribe of bleach blond freaks who seem to be enjoying the great number of beach days. Pass the cocoa butter.

Bridge is our most catchy tune. It starts off with a carnival organ riff, that Pete repeats later on guitar. Build me, build me, build me a bridge out of here.

State I''m In is the only solo effort on the CD. Well not exactly solo, Rich wrote and recorded the entire thing in a single night with some assistance from Jose Cuervo, do you know him? I''m not sharing the publishing.

What The Living Do is a punk rockish tune. The vocals were sung through a Gibson G5 guitar amp to give a bit of distortion. Bridget and Jacob help out on the vocals.

Do It Again and Sweet Marie are two songs the band love to play live. Musically fun, people always respond well to these two.

What''s It Gonna Be? is the type of song I tend to write while experiencing my semi annual existential crisis periods. It explores life-and-how-I''m-going-to-live-it themes. Can you relate? Tick, tick, tick....

Thanks, Rich
