Forming and residing in Chicago, IL, Justin Petertil, Gerard Barreto and Seth Vanek are music industry veterans who have collaborated on every aspect of the business, from composing, performing, recording and mixing, owning a label and operating a show space (the Ice Factory, closed in 2007). Outside of Love Raid, Petertil is a commercial composer, Barreto is a studio-recording engineer and Vanek is a music instructor.
The breadth of their experience in the field is reflected in their textured, well-crafted songs that span the spectrum of musical genres. Teeming with electro-dance energy, Present Tense Love is a bittersweet song about the hard work of relationship’s and the pay off that is love. Moody, minor key verses tangle with melodic, major key refrains against Petertil’s brightly trilling keyboard arpeggios. We’re the Ones showcases Love Raid’s funkier R & B side. Petertil’s street-smart lyrics combine with guest artist Scott Masson’s (OFICE, The Juliets) sultry back-up vocals and Barreto’s bumping bass line on the ones— and twos. Superstar Serenade is a rock anthem abstractly detailing life on the road for a band on tour, recounting buzzing florescent lights, heart wrenching long distance phone calls and scummy hotel pools, peppered with Vanek’s thumping drum rolls and Barreto’s chunky bass riffs. In Wasn’t Unknown and Interview, Petertil writes sardonic songs about celebrity and hype. The former features Barreto’s buttery back-up vocals and the latter features Vanek’s glockenspiel wizardry, played in tandem with drums at live shows. Every Way is a Do Wop inspired ditty, complete with slow dance time signature and Time vacillates between singer/ songwriter sparcity to fully orchestrated instrumentation. Present Tense and Time Has are destined to become classic crooner ballads.
