The concept was to create a pop album that would be simple and acoustic based for solo live performance. The inspiration came from Lindsey Buckingham''s "Under the Skin", a full pop album without the trappings of a full band sound.
Over time in the studio, the concept expanded. The catchy rock of "Oh Lucky Day" and "Love Waits" became too powerful to ignore and simplify. The heavy influences of the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Crowded House and the Eagles made pretty and layered harmonies mandatory. Exposure to folk music through the local open mic scene led to the addition of extra texture through cajon, djembe and upright bass parts. In the end, Bill was too much of a pop traditionalist to avoid drum kit, trumpet, keyboard and electric guitar seasonings where the songs could be improved.
Bill performed all acoustic guitar, bass and vocal parts while other instrumentation was added by a collection of great talent assembled from the local music scene. The resulting CD has an organic sound to it, real music made by real people following instinct wherever it may lead, through a range of styles and dynamics. This is modern pop without the electronic and pristinely perfect emptiness of modern pop. The lyrics are kept straightforward and honest; an audience can detect a phony and the greatest power of music is to clearly communicate across all boundaries.
"In From The Cold" refers to a rediscovery of musical purpose while also representing the insights and values gained by emerging stronger from life experiences. It is a reflection of the artist and what matters to him at this time - the traditional pop song relationships to be sure, but also family, children, friendship, dreams, hope, perseverance and appreciation. Musically and creatively, it is an exciting and positive leap forward in Bill''s extended pop journey.
