A Celtic Opera

ACT I
THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS (circa 1600)

The Clan MacLeod returns from war victorious. Many are dead and dying, among them, Duncan MacLeod, the last surviving son of Mirrdhen, the Clan''s matriarch.

As he bleeds out his life, Mirrdhen takes him to the Witch of Skye, desperately hoping to invoke the magic of the old gods and save her boy. The witch performs her sorcery and the young man is miraculously healed for all time. When they return to their village, the kinsmen drive him away, believing his recovery to be the work of the devil.

Duncan wanders alone in the Highlands for many years, until the day he meets the fair Aurora and they fall instantly in love. They make a home together and live in bliss until the appearance of Fritagern the Visagoth, a mighty Immortal who has been marauding the earth for a thousand years. Duncan and Fritagern clash. But Fritagern ''s sword is broken in the duel and he retreats, vowing to return one day for the Highlander''s head.

The years pass and Aurora grows old and dies. The heartbroken Highlander buries her, promising that they shall be reunited again someday.

ACT II
PARIS

In the 21st Century : A penthouse atop the Eiffel Tower, where the Highlander lives in splendor and solitude. The brilliant geneticist, Dr. Luis Rodia, arrives with the news that the female he cloned at Duncan''s behest, created from Aurora''s remains, has grown into a woman and is now in Paris, waiting to meet Duncan. She knows nothing of her true origins or of Duncan''s secret. She has only been told that a fellow countryman wishes to meet her.

When Duncan gazes upon her, he sees the same woman he loved 400 years ago and falls in love with her all over again. They dance, and the spark is ignited for her, too. Their romantic reverie is interrupted by the reappearance of Fritagern, who, this time, is intent on collecting the Highlander''s head. But, upon discovering that Duncan is unarmed, the Visigoth leaves with a promise to return and a warning to Duncan to always keep his sword close by. To Fritagern there is no sport in taking the head of this unarmed Immortal.

Duncan takes Aurora to his penthouse above the City of Lights. As they grow more intimate, he reveals to her the secret of his immortality and her rebirth. Aurora, horrifed that she has been falling in love with a man who is obviously insane, flees from Duncan, even as he calls out her name to return to him.

Duncan, now having lost his true love twice, is consumed by despair, and longs only for death. He wanders the midnight faubourgs of Paris, seeking out the Visagoth, who alone can put an end to the Highlander''s misery. They finally meet one night in the ancient Catacombs, far below the city streets. They fight, but when Fritagern senses Duncan''s desire for death, he demurs, not wanting to be cheated of a warrior''s victory. He pledges to find Duncan only when he has something to live for. Only then will he take the Highlander''s head.

ACT III
SCOTLAND

Duncan, restless and aimless, returns to his homeland and reclaims the family castle and lands. He senses the ghosts of his past everywhere. Aurora returns to him, resolved to learn of her past and discover their destiny together. This time love finds full bloom, and she accepts his proposal of marriage.

All the kinsmen of the Highlands are invited to the wedding. The castle rings with the voices of merriment as the ceremony begins. It is this moment Fritagern chooses to make his entrance and challenge the Highlander to the final duel. Swiftly, the murderous Visigoth slays Aurora and stands over her corpse laughing.

Duncan grabs his sword. It is a fierce and terrible fight, rending holes in both heaven and earth. But purity has the truer aim, and Fritagern''s head is cut from his body.

And then comes the Quickening.

When it is done, the Highlander lifts the body of his dead bride in his arms and carries her into the depths of the Celtic woods. He is alone again, destined to a life of wandering until the last Immortal is left standing. Until there is only One. Until the Final Gathering, when the Highlander will know the meaning of his destiny.

THE END
