Brazil melts hearts. Aqua Regia is a mixture that melts gold. Brazil is the Aqua Regia to my (Jon Gold''s) heart. This album, recorded while I prepared to undertake a new life based in Rio de Janeiro reflects the excitement of entering into a new phase both personally and musically. It underscores not just a musical journey but a real journey to a new a wondrous, and for me, even mythical place.

Muisicians:

Special guest Airto on drums and percussion on Samba das Meninas and Ypioca. I trembled to hear the first playback of Airto playing my samba "Samba das Meninas" - it was a dream come true!

Harvie S on bass. What a master! He was in top form as at the time of these recording he was touring intensely with vocalist Sheila Jordan. Harvie knows his way around a recording studio and took on the welcome role of unnamed producer at times!

Carlos Malta on woodwinds. THe master from Hermeto Pascoal''s Band happened to be on tour in San Francisco at the time. He generously agreed to come into the studio after his regular tour gigs. A masterful and complete musician, we wold arrive in the studio at 1AM and rehearse. Record at 2 or 3 and finish as the sun came up. What a trooper!

Claudio Puntin, the revered Swiss/Italian clarinetist happened to be in NYC as I was finishing the project. He, Carlos Malta and I had been playing together in Rio some years earlier so it great to have a chance to get into the studio with Claudio.

Many tracks also feature the vocals and portuguese lyrics of Claudia Villela. One of my favorite features of Claudia''s singing is her fearlessness and ability to integrate her voice into the music as opposed to just simply singing words. The lyrics that she put to my music are all interesting and make me look at my own music in a different light.

Celso Alberti (drums and percussion) and Jeff Buenz (Guitar) add so much to this set.

This album is most marked by the depth of musicianship and I would like to think the also the depth of the compositions. Its outstanding character is its variety of mood and style as it honestly reflects my own enthusiasm and doubts and complicated relationships with Brazil!
