This album was inspired and partly written in the UVA hospital. When Dan''s 2nd son was born with a serious internal bleeding condition, the 3 month premature baby was rushed to UVA and lived in the NICU for 8+ weeks. Dan spent many sleepless nights with his son and would follow those visits hours later with time at the UVA piano in the main lobby. The staff at UVA would let Dan sit at the piano day and night - playing, writing, meditating, and praying for his son. This album is about some of those troubling times and with mixed emotions - such as the joy of being a parent, pain for all the suffering, still trying to have faith, and learning a lot about one''s self.
The first 3 songs tie together to make one Rhapsody. The first part (great squall) is about the storms of life and enduring, the 2nd part (the calm after) is about how beautiful things are once the strom has passed, also about the sadness that toll of the storm takes out on us and the lack of faith that we sometimes have, the 3rd part (what manner) is about the God in heaven that is in control of the situation and the realization that we have in Him when He makes those miracles happen. The song Finding Myself is about the uncertainty of who we are and trying to better ourselves through every situation - good or bad. Empty Halls was written during one of the most lonely times in Dan''s life. When the doctor told him, "your son could die." Imagine walking in those dimmly lit hallways with nobody in sight. Soar Angels is Dan''s imperative statement to his son and all his kids. Soar above the pain you''re going through, soar high above this mess of a world we live in, soar in life.....
The great thing about instrumental music is that you can meditate on the sound/mood and use the music to relate to your own individual circumstances. With songs of lyrics - the meaning is definitive. With Dan''s music the interpretation is solely up to the listener and he covers so many emotions with his music - Passion, Love, Anger, Frustration, Sadness, Yearning...
