Back in end days of the big label machine, Gary Kaplan lived a sort of dream. He carved his 15 minutes not once, but twice, as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter in two of the 90s buzz-worthy indie bands – Dandelion Fire and Rotator Cuff. He found himself opening for the likes of Blur, Catherine Wheel and The Charlatans, and with a little push from childhood friend and iconic DJ Matt Pinfield, later landed the video for Rotator Cuff’s fuzz-pop gem “Alfa Romeo” on MTV’s 120 Minutes. Rotator Cuff disbanded just as they began to shine and Gary moved to other interests, choosing to work, travel abroad and even become a restaurateur.
In the summer of 2002, with guitar in hand, Gary crashed a party and had a chance meeting with the host and bass player Dan Coffey, and soon after The Fletchers were born. The band made its home-base in the college town of New Brunswick, NJ, known for the vibrant music scene, which fostered bands like the Smithereens and the Bouncing Souls.
As technology was helping to change the face of the music industry he once knew, Gary realized there were new opportunities and venues to reach new fans of his distinct style of hook-laden indie-pop and set out to self-release and self promote The Fletchers’ debut album. Bright Blue Lights was released in 2008, and launching with the single and album opener “Above This,” the band honed their signature sound. Drawing influence from bands ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Stone Roses, and Pavement to the Velvet Underground, Bright Blue Lights was an album that offered a sweet blend of British and American rock sensibility with lush harmonies and jangly guitars. The band quickly gained attention from national college on online radio stations and began cultivating fans with additional coverage from Spin, and blogs such as PopVulture and iJamming.
Before Bright Blue Lights was even mastered, Gary was already teeming with ideas for the next album. Gary and Dan (bass and backing vocals) enlisted Cliff Heaton (drums) and Rob Freda (guitar) and quickly went to work on the follow up, the latest release Lights Out Loud. Where the previous album was the realization of Gary’s own vision, Lights Out Loud is also the result of the band’s chemistry and musicianship, which added depth to the more streamlined 10-song release. With standout tracks such as album opener “Beaches,” and the infectious “Hideaway House” and “Slow Dive,” Lights Out Loud is reminiscent of XTC, Parklife-era Blur and Sugar, with subtle hints of Sonic Youth, Pavement and Foo Fighters.
For Gary, The Fletchers, and the release of Lights Out Loud are the testament that success can be even sweeter when you do it yourself.
