With Todd Tobias (GBV, Robert Pollard, Circus Devils) again at the recording console, The Celebrity Pilots spin a 16 track tale of an isolated sub-tropic island where old spies are exiled, made to recreate all of their old missions and ultimately stage a grand escape. From the kraut-rock opening of ‘Serious Archers’ to the Zombies influenced ‘Sunrise with Seamonsters’ and lo-fi miasma of ‘The Lie of a Crucified Eye’, main Pilots singer/songwriter Chris Sheehan continues to illustrate a strong ability to write timeless pop masterpieces while leaving room for the kitchen sink.
‘Hawks’ is keenly arranged and features the sharp rhythm section of Josh Gerken (drums) and Adam Dowell (bass), the wonky synths of Jess Faller, cellos from Dan Gerken (brother of Josh) and the majestic trumpets and trombones of Andrew Bowser. The record moves all over the pop-rock landscape and uses as much 60/70s guitars, keys, organs, tube amps and tape and wire machines as humanly possible for a cut rate bunch.
