A personal message from Jeromy Darling:

Based on my very limited memory, it was about 3 years ago that I sat down and wrote As We Tremble. Frankly, I don’t remember where I was when I wrote it, or for that matter why I wrote it. I remember playing it for my little sister Jessica, and my family, on Jessica’s birthday. She was 2 years into her still ongoing and very brutal battle with a mysterious illness that has brought us all to the brink of our sanity and to the very edge of reason. At the time, I didn’t consider the song as being much more than medicine for our hearts and a way for us to momentarily think about something other than the trial that had plagued us for so long.

2 years passed before Taken was written (mostly in my head as I didn’t have a guitar for 3 days), and thus began my foray into writing worship music. To be honest, I was very intimidated by the prospect. Worship songs, for the most part, need to fit into a box: singable, not too hi or low, not too fancy or clever, not too long and not too wordy – nearly the antithesis of most of my other songs. Much to my surprise, it was a freeing process, but one I felt very little control over. My good friend (and occasional writing parnter) Jeff Healy came over one day in the fall of ‘08 with some lyrics which would eventually become Road to Damascus. 30 minutes later the song was born. That pretty much describes the rest of songs on our first Rock worship album. Somewhere in the spring of ‘09, in what can only be described as “the inhabiting”, 11 more songs poured out in an exhausting 2 month span. Then it was over.

I’ve experienced more pain in these last 6 years than in the previous 22 combined and if I had room here to write about them, I would. Suffice to say, these songs were born out of a very dark and sorrowful place in my heart as God’s way of helping me release so much of the agony I’d tried so hard to keep at bay. Sin has infected everything in this world. It hurts the people I love, makes us sick, terrifies us and pushes us further and further away from our Father. These trials have only served to fuel my hatred for it in all of it’s fashions, and cement my desperate desire to preach the Gospel for as long as the Lord gives me breath. The lyrics on this record reflect my commitment to that. It’s very easy to sing about God’s beauty and holiness, to the point that we’re often simply paying Him lip service with our tongues, while our hearts and mind are somewhere else. I can’t promise you’ll like this record, but I can promise that if that’s been your pattern, you’ll find it very hard to sing these songs without asking yourself “Do I really mean these words?”. I don’t know when another record will come about, but that’s a statement that will ring true for as long as God allows us to make music.
