Details:
Attic Songs is intended as a step back from earlier pop rock expressions of the composer. The dozen songs draw their inspiration from an eclectic, obscure well. “Oblivion” is a condensed version of Dave Eggers’ history/novel “What Is The What” which tells the story of Sudanese lost boy Valentino Achak Deng. “Andrew’s Anthem” has similar roots (H.W. Brands’ extensive biography, “Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times”). “Tuesday Morning”, a haunting homage to fallen police officers, was conjured from a televised policeman’s funeral. But the weighty turns in Attic Songs are interrupted frequently by lighthearted fare, as with “The Latest Model”, in which a new father seems about as clueless as a mail order customer trying to assemble a dishwasher without instructions. In “Ten Minutes From Berkley”, a college student ditches school, jams the keys into the ignition, and runs home to the girl. Similarly, the hero of “One Hundred Faces On A Plane” endures the plane ride from hell, because he fully understands the reward waiting on the far end of the runway. The lovable loser in the jazz club trio exercise “In Your Palace” is destined to miss the girl (you get the idea it’s happened before). And French film actress Julie Delpy (obviously a favorite of the songwriter) serves as a sexy, happy metaphor for the protagonist’s real girl.

Attic Songs blends steel guitar, piano, muted bass and a snappy jazz drum kit with the occasional flute and violin that demotes electric elements to a supporting role. Two, three, and four part harmonies appear on many of the songs, while a solo voice marks others. Attic Songs spring from the attic of the mind, with all its memories and inventions in tact and ably reproduced for this melodic, intelligent exercise.
