The idea for this recording grew out of a few duo gigs Bob played with Adam soon after he returned to VA from a nine-year stint playing in Boston and teaching at New England Conservatory. They first met and hit it off musically when Adam was getting his Master''s degree at VA Commonwealth University in Richmond, where Bob teaches part-time on the jazz faculty. The musical rapport they again felt with each other immediately upon reuniting was something both wanted to document, so they came up with arrangements for a mix of some of their own compositions along with a few favorite standards, and went in search of a place to record. That''s tricky when you want a really good piano. They found a great one at the University of VA where we both also teach, and enlisted the talents of Greg Howard as engineer and co-producer - for all intents and purposes the third member of the duo, and a fine musician and recording artist in his own right. The result is music that arguably captures the essence of jazz: a balance of structure and surprise, intensity and space, passion and calm. Thanks for listening!
