Perth based db Threshold are a band with a belief in the power of music and the brutal honesty of rock and roll. Music means so more than just a pleasant tune or some background noise to pass the time. Music is the soundtrack to life. Think about it. Everyone has them. Those memorable songs that transport you back to places, people, and experiences that define YOU. Like a good soundtrack, the music should touch you, exhilarate you, make you think and feel, not just fill the silence. This is db Threshold. For a decade Shaun Corlson (Vocals/Guitar) and Shaun Hoffmann (Drums) formed the backbone of Perth Rock stalwarts/enigma No Flowers No Wedding Dress. Never stars, nor wanting to be, but always intriguing: No Flowers released a bunch of songs still cherished by a small band of music lovers. To listen to those songs now immediately brings back memories of the late 80s/early 90s and of Perth''s original music scene at the time. The Original music co-operative. Gigs at the Shents. Heading to Plaistowes. Listening to tapes. Friends and summer BBQs. Feeling that No Flowers had run out of creative steam, Shaun & Shaun? needed to find a new outlet for their musical passion so they booked some time at Satellite Studios to record some new songs they had written. They had an idea. It was a good idea. Working from the ground up of a voice, a solo 12-string acoustic guitar and some drums the basic tracks of 1000 Miles were recorded. They also enlisted the bass playing prowess of an old friend, Tim Keady. Tim added his vintage Fender induced trademark groove and bottom end, however the Shaun''s felt that something was missing. A glue, a catalyst, an extra element was needed for the sound and for the songs. Dave Bonser came to mind as a person who might bring those necessary ingredients to the band. Not only is he an extremely talented and versatile guitarist, he has a passion for the song writing craft. He had been writing and releasing his own material for several years, with several top 20 songs on https://www.tradebit.com (under the name of Scalpel). Besides, Shaun Corlson and Dave are first cousins who have been saying for 15 years that they should have a jam! In March 2004 they finally jammed and the db Threshold line-up was finalised. Unfortunately Tim''s prior commitments meant he couldn''t join the band, however the bass wizard and tasteful groove merchant, Edddie 3d Robless, was added to the live line up and 1000 Miles was released quietly in May 2004 at Mojos in Fremantle. It would be the second last time they played live in that line up for 18 months. 1000 Miles was recorded and mixed at Satellite Studios by Darren Halifax. Australian pop maestro Michael Carpenter was then enlisted to mix three of the songs, at Love Hz studios (Stagefright Room) in Sydney. Love Hz studios, and interviews with Michael, recently appeared in Audio Technology Magazine (issue 43). Although happy with what 1000 Miles respresented, it was nonetheless embryonic. Their music was still developing a personality during those recording sessions and it was only when the band finished the EP that it began to gain an appreciation of what ''db Threshold'' was. Enthused and creatively energised, db Threshold were keen to capture this new personality; this new sound. It was an extraordinarily creative time for all involved. New songs were being written whenever they got together and everyone realised it was important to document this time. As any creative individual knows: when inspiration strikes, you don''t question why, you just DO. And they did. Although personal circumstances prevented the band from playing live, they embarked on a year long project to design a creative space and a generative framework to write songs and explore some exciting sonic parameters. Although common musical tastes helped to gel the music, the band found that it was their musical differences, when mixed together, that really defined the db Threshold sound. The result of this organic process has been Tear The Darkness Down; an 11-track album recorded and mixed in the bands home studio. "We kept as much of the production inhouse as we could. It was important for us to do this without the influences of other people. The only outside additions were some extra instruments such as violin and piano and these elements were added after the songs were pretty much finished. In a very real sense this recording represents us, 100%, undiluted." Expected release date is April 200
