When director Andrew Lawton first asked composer Justin Samaha to score his film Wake, he said that he needed music that reflected the grief and heartbreak of a young man''s death - but that didn''t feel heavy or forced. The film tells the story of a wake, seen through the eyes of the dead man''s younger brother Nicky. It skillfully avoids cliche and emotional manipulation, and simply lets the viewer experience the wake as they will.
Musically, Samaha does the same. He deliberately crafted a minimalist score, writing gentle, spacious themes that tap into viewer''s likely emotional reactions, but that doesn''t dictate terms. The music carries you along Nicky''s journey through grief, and into the start of his healing.
