Ten years ago, the British government tried to close down Summerhill, a progressive and often controversial private school. The effort failed, largely due to the activism of students at the school. Luckily cameras were rolling the whole time, as director William Tyler Smith happened to filming a multi-year documentary about the school when the trouble began. The film explores the history of the school, the philosophy of its founder A.S. Neill, and the inspiring story of students, parents, and teachers fighting to save their school - and defend their intellectual freedom.
Composer Justin Samaha composed a score that follows the ups and downs of the students and their protest action. From the excitement of student press conferences, to touching vignettes on individual students, to the drama of the High Court trial, his score captures the essence of the school - and the spirit of youth.
