If you went back five years ago and looked up the musicians of Splintered Cross, you would have found them playing banjo or guitar in a bluegrass band or classical violin in an orchestra. But a lot of things can change in five years. It started when the guitarist for Splintered Cross, Caleb King, tried to play his banjo through an electric guitar amp and decided that he might as well just buy a guitar. Splintered cross officially formed when a local coffee shop asked for musicians to play at an open mic and the band decided to give it a try.
Splintered Cross is composed of lead singer Eric Defend, drummer Evan Defend, violinist Rachel King, bass player Carson King, and lead guitarist Caleb King. The band members fuse their backgrounds in bluegrass and classical music with their newfound love of rock music to create an original sound. Currently the band is writing their first album which they hope to record in August.
Many people have asked what the name Splintered Cross means. Guitarist Caleb King explains it this way. “A couple of years back I went to a church service where they had a wooden cross at the front of the room and gave each of us a blank piece of paper. We were asked to write down a sin we were struggling with and then nail it on the wooden cross. I started thinking and realized if I nailed every sin I had committed to the cross, the cross would be reduced to splinters. Our message as a band is that no matter how many splinters are left from your cross, God will take those splinters and forgive you.” So despite Splintered Cross’s love of music, their first love is Jesus Christ and spreading his message is the main goal of the band.
