Cat music is a diverse collection of songs from sultry to gritty with beautiful vocals, clever lyrics and interesting instrumentation. The album opens with ''The Fire'', a song about a group of musicians and poets that meet weekly to showcase their new stuff. The tune has a haunting hook that sticks with you, followed immediately by ''Overpass Messages", Malone''s rhythmic tribute to the American soldier. There is something in this album for everyone. The blues numbers are solid and the ballads are beautiful. Her compositions are grounded by a rhythm section comprised of drummer Heeby Westwood and bass player Edan Deyan. The three spent two full days in the studio laying the ground works for ''Cat Music'' then brought in other musicians later for the color and texture that complete the collection.
String and keyboard arrangements by Stan Swiniarski of Nashville, TN bring a taste of the 30''s gangster era to a few of the tunes, while lilting pedal steele and violin by Steve Latt of New Hampshire give a delicious atmosphere to the ballads. Mike Landers of Plymouth, MA makes a cameo appearance ripping some harp in ''Scattered and Crazy'', and James Callendrella of Bridgewater, MA rounds up the blues and jazzier numbers with selective and stabbing sax.
