Loud guitar punk rock with just two guys making a lot of noise. Lots of catchy hooks and very aggressive pop sensibility.

ROCK: Punk

Details:
The Douglass Kings were born 6 years ago out of the remnants of an aggressive post-punk guitar band called Alkaloid, formed in 1991 in Athens, OH. Dave Weaver and Lee Diamond played together for over 10 years, and after a number of tours and releases, Alkaloid gradually dissolved into just the two of them, practicing in the middle of Humboldt Park in Chicago, looking for the elusive bass player that wouldn''t flake out or suck. After months of practicing together, it became obvious that a bass player was the last additional headache needed, and The Douglass Kings was born.

The Douglass Kings are therefore a two-piece band with drums, guitar and dual vocals. Not withstanding the lack of instrumentation, The Douglass Kings manage to fill speakers with a very thick and full sound. Some call it post-punk, some call it aggressive guitar pop, some call it punk with pop, and some just call it rock. Vocals are aggressive scream-sung harmonies reminiscent of Fugazi, Hot Water Music and the 80''s hardcore band Fuel. Music is melodic, aggressive, post-punkish and poppy. While the style is singularly unique, there are echoes of Elvis Costello, Husker Du, Avail, Mule and 80s D.C. hardcore.

In 1999, the Douglass Kings released their self-titled debut on cassette only. The demo was recorded at two studios over three days by Jon Chin at Workbook Studios in Columbus, OH and by Bob Samiljan at Plutone Studios in Chicago. This release helped establish the foundation of the duo''s sound. Three of the songs from the first set of recordings were re-released on the bands debut album, Smokes.

Smokes was released in 2000 after being recorded with Mike Hagler at Chicago''s Kingsize studios. Every element of their record was made by independent companies in Chicago, IL, reflecting the band''s strong DIY ethic, and sense of community involvement. Brilliant hand-made silk-screen cover art was designed and printed by Dan McAdam at Crosshair, with pressing through Dig-it-All/Beluga and additional artwork by Mark Frazini and Sandy Diamond. The album is almost completely sold out of its first pressing through constant gigging and merch sales through various stores, distributors and the Douglass Kings website. The story and theme behind the Smokes album recounts the rise of a fictional tobacco company, down to the look of the cover. Eventually, the Douglass Kings would expand their fictional lives into an ongoing comic-book type story of Lee and Dave''s would-be travels and trials.

Inc. was the second release of this Chicago duo. It recounts the fictional rise of Douglass Kings enterprises into the single largest corporation in the world, from their humble beginnings as a band and tobacco company from their previous release, Smokes. Again, Mike Hagler of Kingsize Studios and Wilco fame recorded Inc. Once again, Inc. is an entirely Chicago produced effort. The beautiful hand-silk screened and cut packaging of both albums were once-again designed and printed by Dan McAdam and Crosshair Press. The CDs themselves were made through Chicago-based Dig-it-All CD Manufacturing. The second half of Inc. is a live set from Chicago''s famous Double Door.
