Details:
As Pete was writing material for the last George Cowley Experience https://www.tradebit.com album, ''Not Yet Dead'', he realised that he was writing love songs and songs of regret and loss that did not fit neatly with the ''mainstream'' George Cowley Experience material, lacking its surreal and humorous underbelly. Always having been a great fan of real country music since early teenage (Cash, Steve Earle, Son Volt, Willie Nelson, Flying Burrito Bros, New Riders of the Purple Sage) and having included country style numbers on Previous George Cowley Experience cd’s
( Ride Again - ''Line Dancer’s Car'' and Not Dead Yet -'' Bride on the Tide'' ) , Pete decided to do an album of country /https://www.tradebit.comntry /Americana material using a core of GCE members and supplementing them with other local country folk like Nick Davis – The Johnny Cash Roadshow; Clive Kennard -Groovyhead and Becky Pearman - The Royal Alberts .
Some of these songs are rooted in local issues e.g. “Slow Train Running” is about the notorious short platforms that characterise the Worcester - London train service and “Old Songs Don’t Let You Down” is a tribute to Fin Steel, Worcester musician who died in https://www.tradebit.comt of the songs speak the universal language of country and are steeped in loss , heartbreak, betrayal, debt and drink. Variously upbeat and solemn, the band’s Americana influences shine through, Tommy Pope having written three of the songs on the album “The Stains Remain”, “Say You’ll Be “ and “Lonely Night” and Tommy taking lead vocal on four tracks in all. The other tracks are written by Pete Unwin alone and in collaboration with Tommy, Nick Davis and Clive Kennard. Tommy, Nick and Clive are all guitarists who play both with emotion and skill, Nick favouring a Johnny Cash sound, Clive a blues leaning and Tommy is increasingly his own man, although shades of Dick Dale might be heard in what Tommy describes as his “Country Surf Guitar” style especially at the end of “Slow Train Running”. We also have our own, homegrown, Queen of Country, Liz Pearman adding that key female voice to three of the tracks. Discerning listeners will pick up the name checks to the band’s varied musical influences across the album’s lyrics – Johnny Paycheck (“That boy did not write love songs – he wrote “Take this Job and Shove “ songs” from “Country Songs Ain’t Bad Songs”); Rod Stewart ( “Old Raincoats Never Let You Down” from “Old Songs Don’t Let You Down”); Dave Davies “Lions don’t Fight and the Tigers Don’t Roar” from “Sad Circus); Steve Goodman ("Those old rails have heard the news" from "Slow Train Running") and even Smokey Robinson( “People say he was the Life of the Party…” from Sad Circus). In the shakedown, it’s the massive influence of American Country Rock that really informs the Cowley Cowboy sound, raised as we were on what still seems to us an incredible level of big space romance in the songs of Steve Earle, Pure Prairie League, Lucinda Williams and James McMurtry.
Fellow Englishman, Elvis Costello, released an album “Almost Blue” in 1981 which had an advisory note on the cover - "WARNING! This album contains country & western music and may produce radical reaction in narrow minded people." Well, that was 28 years ago and country music still gets a mixed press, some folk also suggesting that you have to be born in Texas to understand about trains, trucks, women, drinking, going home, betrayal and debt. Well, we’re from the Worcestershire / Herefordshire Badlands, U.K. and we understand all those things
