Songs in a variety of styles and a variety of languages
Donni and Clout are Denis Slee and Geoff Clout with Kaori Inoue, Robin Stokes, Harry Hamer, Richard Bostock and Leon Johnson
All the songs on this album, with the exception of tracks 4 and 13, were improvised with no idea of what sort of tune might emerge, by the people listed under “composers”. We throw a lot of stuff away, then added fresh ingredients.
In alphabetical order, by surname, donni and clout feature at various times
Richard Bostock: great saxophonist and extra deep five string double bass player
Geoff Clout: does a variety of things, but always the recording. In a previous incarnation recorded the first two Henry Rollins Band LPs and singles, the second “Lifetime” with Ian MacKaye of Fugazi.
Kaori Inoue: Is Japanese. For one song she had to be got out of bed, for another we recorded the music in Leeds, then when Denis visited her in Tokyo she listened from CD and recorded onto minidisk with a tie-clip mic. She did this kneeling in her wardrobe surrounded by clothes. She only sung it once.
Harry Hamer: Has played with various bands with donni and clout members over the years, right back to the late 80s. He did the drums in Chumbawamba, also plays tabla and congas here.
Leon Johnson: Plays flute and sax, has his own band and manages “the north bar”, voted best bar in England by the Guardian newspaper
Denis Slee: Plays on everything, especially nice electric slide, in my opinion. He also plays the Japanese instruments, the Shamisen and Sanchi.
Robin Stokes: A really good guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and drummer.
