Details:
Born in Western New South Wales in 1973, David’s childhood was characterised by changing scenery. His family moved to a different area of New South Wales every few years, from Gulargambone to Wagga Wagga to Seven Hills to Dubbo to Alstonville. David began to learn the guitar at school in Dubbo at the age of nine. His initial instruction (from an Irish catholic nun) was firmly rooted in the folk tradition, learning to strum songs like ‘Tom Dooley’ and ‘The Streets of Laredo’. David was living in Newcastle by the time he finished school, and began to study an arts degree, as well as continuing to play the guitar and beginning to compose songs, largely influenced by The Beatles and Bob Dylan.

In 1992 he became a guitarist with the band The Hanged Man. The Hanged Man plus its offshoots (Coffin’ Joe and Dog Rex) performed in Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane, playing support for acts such as Died Pretty, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists and the Whitlams. It was with the short-lived band Coffin’ Joe in 1995 that David first performed his own material. After leaving that Sydney-based band, David became involved in the fertile cultural arts scene in Newcastle, performing and hosting events at the original Newcastle Fringe Festivals, which over the years evolved into the annual Electrofringe and This Is Not Art festivals.

By 1998 David had begun performing his songs around Newcastle as half of the acoustic duo Yab-Yum, performing with Rebecca Rushbrook. David moved to the North Coast of New South Wales in 2001, and began a prolific writing spell, influenced by the creative atmosphere of the area and world events. As well as continuing to listen to his long-time favourites such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart, David also immersed himself in the great pre-war country blues recordings, absorbing the influences of Charlie Patton, Skip James, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Bukka White et al.

David began to perform his new material on the North Coast scene with the bands the Authorities, the Thirst and Dogsbody, developing a local reputation as a guitarist and songwriter. In 2004 he joined Jimmy Willing & The Real Gone Hick-Ups on the guitar, performing alongside Dan Rumour of the Cruel Sea. Playing with the Hick-Ups took him to the Tamworth Country Music festival, the Woodford Folk Festival, and on tour with Machine Gun Fellatio. Also in 2004 David completed the recording of his album ‘Listener’ (produced by David Virgin), released in February 2005. He has lately been joined by Matt Elliott (of Ragweed & the Hoochers) on drums & percussion to form D.R.A.M., a dynamic two-piece perfectly suited to the delivery of trad folk ballads and the dirty delta blues songs that David has written. D.R.A.M. are currently working on a new album of David''s songs which will be due for release at the end of 2006.
