Davis Jones is a thinker, songwriter, and musician.
While Davis’s style has evolved from a diverse range of songs and life experiences, his work is characterized by simplicity; it is music boiled down to a pure, honest, and organic state. Not every artist can combine versatile musicianship with an accessible (yes, even catchy) nature. Davis’s art is about revelations, not showboating. It is invitation and shared experience, not high-performance antics. His songs, unique and personal as they are, have a familiar ring to them, like collective sentiments and non-verbal language, universally understood.
Davis was born in Akron, Ohio and grew up listening (and dancing) to records from his father’s massive collection. Al Green, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson are just some of the many names he remembers. Five years ago, he picked up a guitar and taught himself how to play it, strumming melodies he’d learned and loved decades earlier. When he began writing his own songs, the influences stuck. Today, folk blues and soul still resonate in Davis’s music.
In August of 2004, Davis moved to California from Columbus, Ohio. After waiting tables outside of Los Angeles for a few months, he moved to San Francisco and began work on his first album, From Ohio. The songs on this record carry heartfelt coming-of-age themes and speak of major changes in Davis’s life. They hearken back to his childhood and his experiences in the Midwest, while embracing the culture of the West Coast.
“I take a Woody Guthrie approach to writing songs,” says Davis. “My inspiration comes directly from my environment. Stories can come from any place, any experience.”
His music has been described as “folksy, with sprinkles of Motown and Midwestern dust,” but it’s not uncommon to hear hints of Ben Harper and Elliott Smith in some of his work. It’s just Davis, his guitar chords, and the occasional harmonica solo. You’ll feel right at home listening to his smoky, soulful voice and you don''t have to be from Ohio to appreciate it.
