David Mora
David was born March 13, 1961 in Harbor City, CA and grew up in Wilmington, CA. As a child he started playing drums at the age of 5. There was always music in his grandfathers’ home, Gus Mora, a guitar player. His grandmother Alma , a Hawaiian native was also a musician. She played the ukulele. Together they played at parties and at home. His father David Sr. listened to Blues and Jazz, and to such artists as Sergio Mendes, Cal Tjader, Jimmy Reed and Stan Getz. As a child he listened to all the Motown artists, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, also James Brown. His older brother listened to Rock which influenced him as well. The Beatles, Elvis, The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zepplin , Janis Joplin and Carlos Santana to name a few. A self taught player, he played to albums and the radio. When he had his first real job at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard as a Pipefitter he bought congas. The year was 1979. In 1981 he landed a night job at the legendary Concerts by the Sea in Redondo Beach, California where the heavy weights of Jazz came to play. ” I was getting my education “ says David “ watching and listening to the greatest players in the world.” Players such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Pete Escovedo, Poncho Sanchez, Dizzy Gillespie, Alex Acuna, Justo Almario, Giovani Hidalgo, Long John Oliva, Johnny “Guitar “ Watson, Bobby Blue Bland , Freddy Hubbard, Jimmy Smith, Kenny G, Diane Schuur, etc. Listening night after night affected him deeply. At the age of 21 he had his first professional gig, at a bar in Hawaiian Gardens, CA, called Little Archies, playing top 40 cover tunes. ” Poncho Sanchez was hot so I played him every chance I got, Tito Puente too.” Today David is a full-time Longshoreman, working in Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors, not far from where he grew up. His current project includes a song used for a documentary about Harry Bridges, the founder of the west coast Longshoreman. The song “Harry Bridges Mambo“ is a happy unity song intended to join all the national and international locals. The soundtrack includes Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Jackson Browne and Ciro Hurtado. David has done casual gigs with names such as Kim Richmond, Mark Massy, Jeff Kashiwa, Hirth Martinez, George Llanes, Long John Oliva, Bobby Loya, his cousin Rocky Padilla, Bobby Navarette, Alex Cabrera, Karl Carrasco, Sal Rodriguez, rappers Blindo and Macho and new artists Tay, Bette Stuy and Nidia Torres. He performs regularly with local groups Azure and The Ruben Castellanos Latin Jazz Group. David was executive producer on, Buscando La Ortografia, with Long John Oliva of Cuba, which was one of the greatest congueros in the world, who also worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Willie Bobo, Strunz and Farah and Jackson Brown. “ Long John was the best teacher I had” says David, “ he gave me the most and expected me to play good and hard, he taught me Afro Cuban, folklore and rumba, I will miss his deeply.” David’s first album reflects himself and his teacher on the cd entitled “Conga Love” to be released in September. Others on the cd, are Alex Acuna, his lovly daughter Regina on vocals, Justo Almario, Joe Rotundi, John Pena, Bobby Rodriguez, Francisco Torres, Victor Pantoja, and Bobby Loya. “The cd is a reflection of me. Jazz, sraight or latin, brazilian and rumba, r&b, funk, blues and spiritual. That’s me, that’s what I am. Enjoy and God Bless!”
