Original Liner notes (by Daniel White, November 8, 2005):

With five years since the turn of the century Brooklyn has become to music what Hollywood was to movies in the 1920''s: a city awash in song. Williamsburg, across the river from the East Village, is where the Lower Manhattan art crowd first staked thier claim when the real estate boom drove them out of thier traditional dwelling below 14th street. The trendsetters were followed by the trendy and in short order the realtors also turned thier attention east and the rents rose accordingly.

The artist community, in search of cheaper rent and space migrated deeper east into Brooklyn. They landed on the edge of Bushwick in a landscape comprised mostly of active and abandoned factories; an industrial wasteland that feeds the bodegas and 99-cent stores of the city with everything from cheap toys to Acme brand cakes.

In a studio behind the Acme cake factory over the summer of 2005 you were likely to find David Hoffman hard at work on his latest album, Smash Hit. This was the tail end of two years of composition and recording. The work was begun with and acoustic guitar and computer in a bedroom, but by this point had progressed beyond it''s cloistered beginnings. Hoffman had poured his soul, his talent and a humble fortune into perfecting a work that was as decidedly different from the other albums coming out at the time as Hoffman was from the standard Williamsburg hipster-cum-musician. Hoffman has done without the art damaged faux irony of his peers''s works instead utilizing genuine craftsmanship and feeling.

Smash Hit finds an artist who is hitting his stride creatively. Hoffman has clearly done his homework. There are no gimmicks to his production, no pretence to his lyrics. These songs are the man.
