A native of Texas, Debbie’s musical influences include everything from Sons of the Pioneers to Mozart. She credits her parents for being her first musical influences and encouraging her to follow her interests where they lead. She began singing at a young age and began performing at her church around the age of 14. In high school, she played bass clarinet in the award-winning Duncanville High School band. She also performed in high school musicals and plays and continued after high school in productions at the Duncanville Community Theatre in Duncanville, TX. She pursued a Music Theatre degree at the University of Texas at Arlington where she studied voice with Jing Ling Tam. While at UTA she performed as the “Nightinggale of San Marcand” in Once Upon a Mattress and “Lucy” in The Telephone.
Since then, she has performed in several local venues, including Johnny High’s Country Music Revue in Arlington, TX and The Deep Ellum Opera Theatre in Dallas. Her musical background includes singing in various community theaters in shows such as “Oklahoma!” and “The Fantasticks”. She has performed at local coffee houses, Portofino’s Italian Restaurant with David Paul Pfleger and the worship ministry of Fielder Road Baptist Church and The Church on Rush Creek in Arlington. Debbie has performed in such prestigious venues as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Since 1997, Debbie has also sung with local R&B band Johnny D and the Doo Wopps.
Debbie West has been a teacher with the Arlington I.S.D. for several years. She graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. Her varied interests led her to complete her Master’s of Science in Computer Education in August of 2005. Debbie also has a passion for ministry and has served in a leadership role for her church’s partnership with The Journey Church in New York City.
Debbie recently tried her hand at songwriting and included one of her original songs in her debut CD, entitled “Love of a Lifetime”.
