The Defilers are a rockabilly/greaser punk three-piece from Charleston, South Carolina. Originally formed in the fall of 2001 as a four-piece, the current consists of Arleigh Hertzler on lead guitar and vocals, Michael Dumas on bass and vocals, and Duck Reynolds on drums.
Hailing from such far-flung places as West Monroe, Louisiana, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Beaufort, South Carolina, the boys in the band consider Johnny Cash, Social Distortion, Hank Williams, and many other rockabilly, country, blues, and punk pioneers as common influences, but The Defilers do not sound like a simple sum of these sounds. With Hertzler and Dumas sharing songwriting duties, each original comes from a different angle, none sounding just like the rest, yet all fitting into the sound that the band hears in its collective head.
The Defilers have played to packed crowds at many venues around Charleston, including The Music Farm, The Plex, Johnny Ola''s Anchor Café, Cumberlands, The Village Tavern, and Echos. They have also entertained crowds as far south as Bradenton, Florida, where they headlined the 2004 Heatstroke Hotrod Hoedown, and as far north as Norfolk, VA. The guys are always looking for new places to play out of town to bring their self-described style of "rawkabilly" to a new audience.
Whether smoking through a cover of a Johnny Cash song or burning down the roadhouse with original tunes like "The Further I Get from Texas (The Less I Think of You)," The Defilers are a rough and ready set that feel as comfortable throwing elbows in the eye of the pit as they do in a smoky honky-tonk stealing your woman.
