Long John Oliva''s AC Timba Jazz Projects latest release, "BULEYA" under ORISHA''s Records, is an appetizing Afro-Caribbean Jazz blend dedicated to the memory of their former bandleader, innovator, master percussionist and friend Long John Oliva. "BULEYA", is an album compiled of original tunes written and arranged by Long John, that draws from deep within the soul of the Jazz Rumbero, to reveal yet another one of his inspiring musical views fusing Afro- Caribbean elements with Jazz... Long John Oliva''s AC Timba Jazz Projects ingenuity and creativity on "BULEYA", has given birth to a striking sound that beckons listeners of all ages. Their manipulation of instruments has created a new palette of colors into the world of music that will enchant and delight audiences of all ages, all over the world.
Long John was probably one of the most talented, least accredited and most complicated percussionists of our time and his. He was a true master in not only Afro Cuban rhythms, but in ALL forms of percussion. He had set the pace for many musicians, percussionists, students and music lovers who have used and incorporated his style, technique and drumming, in their own music for the last 3 generations. He was known for his unique style of technique and ability to play multiple polyrhythmic parts of the drum that are extremely complicated and almost inhumanly impossible, but "BULEYA" has it all.
Long John''s approach to music is a matter of the heart, his appetite for experiment, and his influences that stem from his African heritage and Caribbean origins. His Solo on "Congo", a tune off "BULEYA" is a perfect example of this.
"BULEYA", is a "Cuban Descarga", a puzzle of Long John''s musical influences, merging pieces of African rhythms, Afro-Cuban Rumba Cross-overs, Puerto Rican rhythms, Authentic Afro Cuban Folklore, Timba, Salsa and Contemporary Jazz.
On June 21st, 2004, Long John passed away in his home, in Hesperia, leaving his wife Peggy Jo a legacy and wealth of music behind. On July 10, 2004, almost 3 weeks after his passing, the memory of Long John was honored when "The AC Timba Jazz Project" (without their world renowned leader), was named the "2003-2004 KJZZ 88.1 FM''s Latin Jazz Artist''s of the Year", winning the World Famous, "Long Beach Jazz Search Competition", two years in a row, accomplishing a goal that Long John could only dream about. And, on August 15th, 2004, the "AC Timba Jazz" performed his tunes in his honor at the "Long Beach Jazz Festival" in Long Beach, CA.
Today, "The AC Timba Jazz Band" continues to carry out Long John''s musical legacy, dedicating their creative talents and continuous hard work to their Bandleader, Friend and Brother eternally.
"Long John Oliva, Ibaé Tonu Abure", which in the language of Lucumi, means "Rest in Peace My Brother".
