On previous albums, Meghan La Roque has defined her lyrical shtick mainly through lofty, spiritual declarations dealing with hope in the context of romantic love. Her new album Drunk in A Kiss, is a much darker affair. Marking a total departure from the tree-hugger sentimentality that defined her earlier work, Drunk in A Kiss deals primarily with themes of struggle and romantic dysfunction. While gentler ideas concerning spiritual freedom and idealism can still be heard throughout the album, they are vastly overwhelmed by more rugged confessions about insatiability and sexual anguish. Needless to say, the Martha’s Vineyard singer/songwriter has undergone a metamorphosis of sorts from her folk-inflected, freedom-fighting roots to a more aggressive melodic style, punk-ish theatricality, and a newfound penchant for stark, biting hooks which makes for an elevated and haunting follow-up.
