Biography
(translated from https://www.tradebit.com
Listing Ship was born in 2002 with songwriters Lyman Chaffee, a math professor, and Heather Lockie, a multi-faceted musician. Their constant music search have taken them through several experimentations, resulting in the current line-up of these seven musicians in 2005:

•Chaffee himself began studying music out of a theory book in college. Formally, he studied mathematics and logic, and got his doctorate in Descriptive Set Theory. He met Lockie at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and they began learning how to write music together. They formed an art-rock band called Leather Hyman in 1991. Years of club playing began to take a toll on their hearing, so in 2002 they re-formed as Listing Ship, and they have since dedicated themselves to making mellower but equally innovative modern folk music.

•Lockie (viola, vox, banjo) formally studied French, English literature and music. She is an English and music teacher as well as an illustrator in her spare time. Although her primary instrument is viola, she can get by on banjo, piano, and violin. She is a primary songwriter for Listing Ship, and has worked on film scores as well as played with various national and local live acts.

•Julie Carpenter (violin, vox), along with Lockie, recently toured with Eels With Strings. They have both backed up Arthur Lee/LOVE, Lydia Lunch, Dave Pajo of Papa M, and have both played in various Los Angeles-based bands such as W.A.C.O. Carpenter has her own project called Noctiluca and has played in Texas Mafia, and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lockie has sat in with Brian Wilson’s “Smile” backing band, recorded with Macy Grey, and jammed with Sparklehorse when they have come through Los Angeles.

•Kyle C. Kyle (drums) spent his formative years in the cultural revolution of funk, and he respresents a page in the book of Los Angeles punk rock. He has played with, among others, Venus and Razorblades, the Skulls, The Motels, Wafflebutt, W.A.C.O. Currently he is working with Laurie Pepper on “Straight Life,” a movie on the life of Art Pepper.

•Michael Whitmore (vibraphone, guitars, banjo, percussion) is a veteran of the Los Angeles underground music scene. Composer and multi-instrumentalist, he has a predilection for the sound of the 10-string guitar as it gives a peculiar dark tone to his compositions. He has two solo cd releases to his credit, and he has written scores for cinema, television, and theater. He has also collaborated with numerous artists such as The Negro Problem.

•Laura Steenberge studied linguistics at USC (Univ. of Southern Calif). She is a pianist, acoustic bassist, composer. She plays with Daphne the Painted Lady, The Lottery, and does solo work.

•Shawn Lockie sings and plays keyboards with Listing Ship. She is an actor and dance instructor in Los Angeles.

“Time to Dream,” the most recent Listing Ship album, is a voyage into memory, into the American past of folk roots, bluegrass, country, appalacian music, emerging in the style of 60’s folk a la “Pentangle”. The instrumentation of this album is lush with banjo, violin, violas, string bass, and mandolins, which could moisten the ears of the driest listener. Thematically, there are vast references to nature, vivid landscapes, dense and rich with metaphors that gently take the listener and invite him to give himself completely to the depth of melody. These minimalistic pop folk compositions are as skillfully woven as traditional Irish or Scottish melodies that tell stories between turns and jigs. This is not to say that this eclectic band has no rock moments; these psych-folk ballads alternate with pop-punk rhythms, where detuned and stormy guitars – sort of Sonic Youth – match with exotic violin and viola. With the contributions of electric bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen, Stooges, Dos, the Secondmen) on 8 tracks, “Time to Dream” happens slowly, exerting over its audience an undeniable charm.

LISTING SHIP has received positive attention for "Time to Dream", notably from https://www.tradebit.com (Band of the day), Los Angeles Times (Buzz Bands column featured band), LA Record (featured band), https://www.tradebit.com (Album of the Month), KPFK (Abum #1 of 2005). In Feb 05 Barry Smolin had LISTING SHIP on-air to play some of the new record "Time to Dream". In Mar 2005 LOW asked LISTING SHIP to open for them and PEDRO THE LION at El Rey in Los Angeles, a big honor. In June 05 Nic Harcourt at KCRW (LA, CA) picked up "Time to Dream" and has given it considerable pre-release airplay. In Jan/Feb ''06 LISTING SHIP went on a SW and NW U.S. tour, and returned to Los Angeles to play a month long residency at The Echo in L.A. They are planning to tour the NW and east coast in summer ''06.

Live, their acoustic sound is augmented with charming and evocative arrangements, multi-vocal harmonies and unusual rhythms. LISTING SHIP is kaleidoscope of joyful musical experiences that only finds the ideal dimension in live performance."
