E is for Everything!
Recent Dec. 2005 VH1 Songwriter of the Year finalist and Runner-up, Lisa E. Harris has been working on her debut album, Ms. Everything, for almost one year now. This Houston native initially transplanted to NYC to attend the Mannes College of Music, where she received a BM (Bachelor of Music) in Vocal Performance. She continued her studies at the Manhattan School of Music receiving her Master of Music degree in 2004. Conservatory by day /jazz scene by night, musical theatre as a child/ Southern hip-hop and rock throughout life, has graduated a very eclectic perspective on sounds intertwined. With a concentration on Opera, Lisa E. loves all things theatrical. “Not necessarily dramatic all the time”, she says, “…but the suspension of disbelief that is required to sing one feeling for 4 minutes and to fill the ‘Air’ is awesome.”
Experimental shows with her band, The Big Bang Theory, led Lisa E. to realize that although spontaneity is vital and key for a form of live, performance art, rehearsal is just as apropos. Thus is born the Nights of Malta, or the Maltese nights, as we like to call ourselves at home, a band just for you and me. Lisa E. and the Nights of Malta performs selections from her debut album as well as contemporary arrangements of classical Art songs.
In March 2006, Ms. Harris performed a live installation at Paul Rodgers 9W Gallery in West Chelsea as a part of the Forces of Nature series by painter Angelbert Metoyer. In 2004, she was commissioned by Metoyer to compose and perform a supplemental short opera, Thirteen Moments in a Black Sunrise, which is also apart of the aforementioned series. Recent performances include Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Regina Coeli as well as The Christmas Eve Mass, all Live from St. Patrick''s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, where Lisa E. is a professional soloist and section leader. In the fall she appeared as Una Sorella (a nun) in One World Symphony''s production of Suor Angelica and as a special guest at the Temple of Understanding’s Juliet Hollister Awards at the Rainbow Room. She sings Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Wagner, blues, rock and roll, and sacred music too, and has been seen in Aspen, Texas, all over New York, California, and France.
Comfortable in various languages, conversational in 5, Lisa E. has a song for every occasion. But by far, one of her most enjoyable performances of 2005 was the premiere of her photOpera, The Transformation of Oshe, a photo montage/ operatic impromptu collaboration with photographer Alisha B. Wormsley, installed in 3 segments at Java studios in Greenpoint. 2005 also brought Lisa E. to Lincoln Center, as the soprano soloist in Beethoven''s Choral Symphony with L"Orchestre du Monde, and the Altino Brothers, piano duo extraordinaire.
She has recorded with the Exit, M-One of Dead Prez, Noble Society, Prima and is in project with Me''shell Ndegeocello for Chris Dave, Afrohypnotic and others. Lisa E. can be seen in productions with Encompass New Opera Theatre (NYC) where she also serves as the Managing Director, frequently at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park, and solo ventures abroad. An avid recitalist as well, the current LP recording finds Lisa E. singing the new Urban American songbook, all songs self-composed. With production by Sudari (Jazzy Soul Productions) Zin, and Digital Ancient, Lisa E. has accomplished her goal of representing many facets of a generation “lost in complacency.” Ms. Everything is a journey in itself and there is no doubt that Lisa E. Harris takes the road less traveled.
