Based on Icelandic folk tunes these two short pieces for string orchestra are among some of the finest examples of Svendsens occupation with the theme of national identity in music and are a testament to the composers philanthropic ideals. Ideals he shared with the dedicatee of the work, Carl Warmuth, who took over his fathers music store in 1874 and who flourished as an agent and champion of music in the composers home town of Christiania.
